Jasmine
I have been planning to write this post for a while now. I just had to wait for the right time as I wanted to take the best pictures when the jasmine plants are on full bloom. This is a tribute to my husbands mother who loves plants as much as I do. She bought a Jasmine plant from India about 40 years ago and it still thrives in her home. She took that plant with her from apartment to apartments and from one house to another, every where she lived. Literally hundreds of cuttings were taken out of that plant and were given to friends and family so they all would have little Jasmine plants growing in their house.
Jasmine plant produces small fragrant white flowers and is widely used in the perfume industry. There are many varieties - Jasminum sambac, J. grandiflorum, J. officianale etc.
The below variety is called J. grandiflorum. The major difference is in the flowers with 2 tier petals compared to common jasmine.
Flowers bloom twice an year. The plant grows best in a tropical climate and needs to be brought indoors every winter.
Another variety with single line of petals. The fragrance of Jasmine flowers are simply out of the world. If you never experienced it please make an effort to get some flowers somehow. The flowers are hard to come by and is used in garlands for weddings and in temples in many Asian cultures.
The below variety is called J. officianale (Common jasmine) with only a single tier petals.
Jasmin is a woody vine and can be trained as a bush.
The plant needs well drained soil, regular watering and good fertile soil. It is a tropical plant and needs temperature above 70's through out the year. So we bring our plants indoors every winter.
The below is my mother in laws plant that she trained to grow as a vine .
The plant is propagated by stem cuttings (just like roses). Even with rooting hormones not all stem cuttings will take so remember to take extra cuttings. A jasmine plant will make a nice mother day gift and can be bought from nurseries for $10-$25 depending on the size of the plant.
