Figs
Figs (Ficus carica)
I have 3 fig trees. Two of them were gifts (a light and dark one - could be a Kadota and Brown turkey variety. Unfortunately my friends don't know what variety it was) from friends and one I bought from home depot (brown turkey).Fruits are just forming.
Fruits form in the area where the leaves meets the stem, usually one fruit per leaf node.
Our Brown turkey fig is usually the one that produces fruits first. We just plucked the first ripe fruit 3 - 4 days ago (around August 20-22nd )
I made a great Fig jam and also tried a Fig Focaccia. The jam came out well but the Focaccia was a hassle. It tasted good but the large fig pieces I left on top of the bread keep falling down into my oven base. I tried putting cookie baking pan underneath which caught some of those figs but it was big mess cleaning the oven and the baking pan (ended up throwing out one of the cookie baking pan)
My dad's advice - when trying a new recipe, make only one batch instead of 2 or 3.
I also tried baking dinner rolls with a few fig slices and that turned out pretty well. The pictures are listed below.
Ripe fruits from both varieties.
Update (11/09/20): I am sorry to say, 5 years after planting the fig plant that I bought from Home Depot is not producing any fruits. It does not look like it will in the future either. I will be removing it this year. So that leaves me with 2 varieties. I really dislike taking out my plants. But space is limited and I have to make do with what I have, that means unproductive plants need to go.
